Australia's greatest track race
The Austral is the world's oldest track race and is regarded by many as Australia’s greatest track cycling event.
This year marks the 127th edition which began on the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1887.
It brings together Australia’s best track cyclists competing over six to eight laps or 1500-2000m, is held as a handicap, meaning riders are assigned different start locations according to their racing ability on the 250m velodrome track.
The more highly favoured riders will begin from 'scratch' or the start line, with some riders afforded a head start of up to 250m. The handicapper's goal is to have all riders finish the race simultaneously.
Whether you’re a keen rider or a fan, these events will ensure Melbourne is at the centre of the cycling universe for the 127th Quest Ivanhoe Austral Wheelrace.
