Georgia Baker and Alex Manly dominantly defend Madison national title

Georgia Baker and Alex Manly have defended their elite women’s Madison national championship in dominantly at Melbourne’s Darebin International Sports Centre Velodrome.

The two stars of Australian women’s track cycling were a class above the nine other young pairings on Saturday night, winning by a margin of 67 points.

The 2023 Madison world championship silver medallists led for all but for the first 20 laps of the 120-lap race.

Baker and Manly would secure the first of their two lap gains and 20 points with 76 laps remaining.

Six laps later they were on the attack again after the 70 to go sprint, and very quickly notched up another 20 points for their second lap gained.

From that point on, it was a case of waiting for sprints for Baker and Manly, who would win the final five sprints.

Teenagers Sophie Marr and Keira Will finished second with 30 points.

Sally Carter and Sophie Edwards grabbed third on the last sprint of the night after collecting six points for finishing second at the finish to jump clear of Team BridgeLane pair Haylee Fuller and Keely Bennett.
